The Fairy Queen
THEATER. June 14, 16, 17, 2011 @ 7:30 p.m. Featuring Dusan Tynek Dance Theater.
Henry Purcell's 1692 masterpiece was the most ambitious opera ever to be staged in seventeenth-century England. It was also the best. Fairy Queen was the multi-media spectacular of its day and a carefully calibrated, politically savvy attempt to protect the theatre as an institution at a time when its critics were seeking to enlist government backing for its reformation or, better still, its complete abolition.
Based on extensive original research, Big Apple Baroque's ground breaking production is attracting widespread interest because Fairy Queen in context is the Fairy Queen that has never been told in modern times. Combining projections of contemporary prints and an original film with dazzlingly imaginative choreography and costumes that echo the world of seventeenth-century court masque, The Fairy Queen will be visually as well as musically stunning.
Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre joins the exquisite cast of musicians, singers and actors of Big Apple Baroque for this masterful reinterpretation, boldly heralding a 17th-Century classic into the 21st! Three nights only - not to be missed!
