Bohumil Hrabal: A Poet Blessed and Damned (Požehnaný a prokletý básník, Bohumil Hrabal), dir. Olga Sommerová, 1998, 53 min., subtitles

The most important postwar Czech author, Bohumil Hrabal, would have turned 90 on March 28 of this year. To mark the occasion, the Czech Center New York presents an episode from the Czech TV series "Unexplained Deaths," directed by one of the most important documentary filmmakers in the Czech Republic.

Olga Sommerová graduated from the Prague Film Academy's Department of Documentary Production in 1979. Since then, she has made more than 60 documentary films and won more than 20 prizes, both at home and abroad. Many of her films have aroused great debate, such as What Women Dream Of (2000), which was also made into a very successful book. One of Sommerová's other most important works was her documentary from the series "Lost Soul of the Nation." Titled The Loss of Tradition, it focused on the persecution of small landowners by the Communist regime.
