Thank You for Each New Morning (Díky za každé nové ráno) dir. Milan Šteindler, 1994, 100 min., subtitles Starring Tereza Brodská, Petr Čepek, Ivana Chýlková, and Tomáš Hanák

Thank You for Each New Morning depicts a mosaic of events over the 20 years following the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968—two decades that distorted society and relationships. Based on the novel of the same name by Halina Pawlovská, the film tells the story of Olga, her family, and her friends with terse humor and sarcastic irony. Olga grows up under the influence of her first loves and her relationship with her father, a Ukrainian poet, into a world of “normalization," as the period after the invasion was referred to.

This movie was the first attempt by a Czech filmmaker to come to terms with the former regime, a bitter comedy in which laughter gives way to tears. Yet the heroes of the film, even in times of hardship, manage to adopt a positive attitude to life and the lives of others: They know how to laugh and have fun.

Director Milan Šteindler was one of the founders of the now-legendary Sklep theater troupe during the 1980s, and a "Sklepesque" view of the world is clearly evident in this film. Thank You won the Czech Lion as Film of the Year for 1994, as well as having received various prizes abroad.
