In an adaptation of Ota Pavel's novel, based on his father's memories of World War II, Karel Kachyňa found a balance between light comedy and rich drama. Leo Popper, an ardent fisherman and vacuum cleaner salesman, is a vibrant, happily married man.  When the Nazis come to power, Leo is suddenly dismissed from his job.  Only then do we realize that he is Jewish, which sets up the film's central metaphor: to Leo, the deer in the forest where he goes to fish are sacred, innocent creatures.  When his two sons receive notice that they are to be sent to a concentration camp, he has to supply his sons with food for the journey…
