The Rebels is the third feature film of director Filip Renč. In collaboration with Zdeněk Zelenka, he wrote a film script for a musical with the explanatory subtitle "A Musical Retrospective of the 1960s". In a fine artistic style imbued with the atmosphere of the late 1960s, the film relates a passionate love story to which history was not especially kind. Tereza, a graduating secondary-school student, and a young man who deserted military service: these are the principal characters of a story dominated by dance and music. The film comprises a total of eleven major choreographic numbers that are a pictorial presentation of the most popular musical hits of the 1960s. The author’s aim was to make a film which, against the background of dire times in Czech history, offers a humorous narration of all the positive aspects of life, notably love. The Rebels tells of a period that may serve as a discovery for the young spectators and a powerful memory for the older viewers.
