Vladimír Šlapeta: Czech Functionalism

April 13, 6:30 PM
Prague Kolektiv, 143 Front Street, DUMBO, Brooklyn, NY

Professor Slapeta is the former Dean of the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University in Prague where he currently serves as the Vice Rector.

He is visiting New York on the occasion of the the exhibition featuring the work of his father and uncle (the architects Lubomir and Cestmir Slapeta) to open this April 18 at Columbia University's Wallach Art Gallery. The Slapeta brothers studied in Breslau under German architect Hans Scharoun (1893-1972) and developed numerous projects before World War II throughout Czechoslovakia.

Professor Slapeta's April 13 presentation on Czech functionalist architecture at Prague Kolektiv and the upcoming exhibition at Columbia's  Wallach Art Gallery will offer a fresh context within which to view avant-garde design of the pre-war generation.  It will also illuminate the often over-looked contribution made by Czech architects during this period.
