Karel Gott, Celebration of Life

Join us in honoring Karel Gott, voted the Czech best male singer in the annual Český slavík national music award 42 times, most recently in 2017. With a special performance by Czech swing singer Jan Smigmator.

Screening of short films from Karel Gott’s concert at Carnegie Hall and his professional career, and a performance by Czech swing singer Jan Smigmator, to honor the late pop singer Karel Gott , a romantic Czech crooner whose popularity behind the Iron Curtain helped earn him the nickname “Sinatra of the East.”

Karel Gott (July 14, 1939 – October 1, 2019) won the Golden Nightingale Award (Zlatý slavík) as the Czech top male singer, voted on by music fans, 42 times, most recently in 2017. Over the course of his career Gott released over 100 albums and 100 compilation albums. In 2009 he was awarded the distinguished Medal of Merit by the Czech government for his contributions to Czech culture.

One of Gott’s biggest hits was the theme song from “Maya the Bee,” a popular German cartoon series. Singing in various languages, he covered hit songs like “Moon River,” “Pretty Woman,” and “Lara’s Theme,” from the film “Dr. Zhivago.”
