ZDENĚK LHOTSKÝ, REBECA HUERTA VIGA AND STUDIO PELECHOV

Zdeněk Lhotský is one of the Czech Republic’s dynamic generation of artists who came of age after the 1989 “Velvet Revolution.” He trained at the Academy of Applied Arts in Prague and is well known for his mixed-media work and architectural installations. In 1994 Lhotsky decided to focus his attention on the design and craft of cast glass. He took over the management of the worldrenowned Center for Architectural Glass in Pelechov. The firm now produces a wide range of objects including Lhotsky’s designs for elegant functional platters, bowls, and monumental sculptural vessels, as well as the execution of sculptural commissions by international artists and architects. Each piece is hand made by melting crushed glass or “slumping” textured glass sheets in molds. The bold patterning of some cast glass plates comes from the incorporation of brightly colored slices of glass cane or “murrini.” The pieces are finished by hand cutting, polishing, and in some cases, sandblasting. Rebeca Huerta Viga is a young artist from Mexico who has been creating work in Studio Pelechov.
